Holy mess with animals

November 24, 2014

005 Please open your baskets. I will go between rows and bless the contents – the priest said.

This time it’s not Easter blessing of food, but blessing of our four-legged friends. Catholic priest squeezes between the benches, peering into each box, patting rabbits, hamsters, dogs and cats.

Woof, woof, meow, meow – you can hear around. Suddenly we also hear the noises of two horses!

Through various actions priests try to encourage people to come to church. Such Sunday masses are e.g. hold outdoors and not inside the church. I must admit that the way works. On Sundays with “special attractions” more people than usual visit the mass.

After the mess we enjoy the rest of the day on a hike in the forest near Kassel to the statue of Hercules mentioned in the previous article.

Hiking to the Cross Peak

November 8, 2014

008 - 140817 - Zlaty Chlum i Krizovy wrchRoute: Rejviz – Zlaty Chlum – Cross Peak – Zlaty Chlum – Rejviz (15 km)

In the Czech Republic, just a few kilometers behind Głuchołazy, the small Polish town on the border where I was born, there is the tiny village Rejviz situated at an altitude of 792 m above sea level. It is famous mainly for winter sports. Besides the numerous cross-country ski routes and ski lifts there are many hiking trails suitable all year round which start here. On one of the last sunny days of autumn we pick a hiking trail to the Cross Peak.

Before we get there we pass Chlapecke Rocks, where we take pictures and stop at the Zlaty Chlum (875 m above sea level). Here we climb the 26-meter high tower built in 1899 and from the top we enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Near the tower there is a rustic bar serving sausages and a delicious herbal alcoholic drink. After a few more kilometers through the forest we reach Cross Peak where a beautiful restaurant is situated. Inside we eat delicious garlic soup with egg – a specialty of Czech Republic and drink the famous black beer Cerny kozel. After this highlight all that is left to do is the hike back…
